Being in a high school was very different from the atmosphere of an elementary school. In the elementary school I got the chance to know the students on a more personal level because I was with them all day. With this opportunity I could speak to them about any difficulties they have and account for them in my lesson plans.
In the high school I was given the information package for each students disability but a lot of the invisible disabilities are only found out with talking to the student personally. This was a task but when you talk to the students like a friend and not higher than them, you gain their respect and with that you can find out more about and make sure that you create an inclusive classroom.
My biggest challenge in this placement was connecting with students when there are so many and only one of you. It's overwhelming and I know as a teacher candidate I did not do my job because I did not learn enough about each student individually. Yes there were some but I want to know about each student, even the shy ones that won't talk unless you bring forth the conversation.
If I am in a high school next year for a placement I would like to create a more inclusive classroom with the small amount of time I have with the students and find ways of getting to know the students individually. This will be hard for me, as I am someone who is shy as well but I will need to step out of my shell and speak to the students around me and make time in my lessons to find out each of them and their interests.
