This was my hardest placement of all and of course my last. This placement I had many different health problems interfere with how I was doing and this really affected my teaching, how I looked and my attendance.
First I started this placement a week later than everyone else because I had a surgery and needed some time to recovery. The surgery was as a result of the 2010 car accident. It was successful, however I did need to take some time off to recover. It was a simple surgery. One doctor had to take a screw that was in my left eye socket out because it was in my sinus and causing infections and the other doctor had to come in and clean out the sinus..
Secondly, I had missed some time because I was at the worst of my depression and some days I just can't get myself out of bed, I let my dog out and then I go back to bed. I have been having a hard time accepting the car accident and life post accident.
Lastly, my eye swelled shut a month post surgery as a result from the surgery and I had to take a week off because I was on IV and when I returned to the school I was still on IV with two lines.
The first class I was teaching was a grade 9 applied French with nine students. The students French was very weak and they were in there to get their credit and not take French again. There were two learning disabilities and one hearing disability in the class. For the hearing disability, I used a microphone when I spoke to make sure that the student could hear everything I said and with the small class I was able to work one on one with the students who had learning disabilities to make sure that they understood the lesson. With the class being weak in French, it was important to make sure that everyone understood the lesson. At the end of each class we would do something together to check understanding and I would not let the same people give me the answers so I could check the understanding from everyone. The final activities that I did at the end of every unit were fun and had different components. They had a little writing, a little speaking and some kind of drawing or art. This was they are using different skills and their strengths are included.
The second class I was part of was a grade 10 history class. I taught the 1920s unit and loved it. I did not give the students a test or quiz to show me their knowledge of this unit but mini projects throughout the unit that they were to complete. They were given time each day to complete these projects and were not given projects each day and had two work periods so that they students did not feel overwhelmed and did not have to complete the projects at home. Each project included a different skill. One project was a writing task with short essays, another was creating a speakeasy with a budget and drawing the layout and a presentation about a new invention from the 1920s using the slang of that time. The students had a lot of fun completing some of the assignments and were excited when given time to complete them and it was rewarding to see as a teacher. I was very lucky in this class that there were no disabilities but it was still important to make sure that students were given things to allow them to excel and receive good marks.
