During my first placement at Dr. Ross Tilley public school in October 2012, I was in a grade 8 classroom with a variety of students. Some of these students were just learning English, some had learning disabilities, some faced bullying that impacted their work and others were just getting by. This classroom presented to me a wide range of knowledge and interests.
One assignment I had them do was for them to create a journal and include good memories they have that they never want to forget. These memories could be of the father that committed suicide or the first time they rode their skateboard. There were a variety of memories shared with me while I marked them with a rubric the class and I developed.
This assignment was developed in different ways so to include all students and for all students the ability to complete it. Some students had someone write the memories out for them as they recounted it, others completed it on a computer and others just wrote their memories with lots of visual images. This assignment was not to be completed in a tradition fashion but to incorporate the students individually and for them to have their memory book as a keep sake.
